Road closures near Padang

Several roads will be closed to traffic near the Padang tomorrow during the National Education Show 2 .

They include Stadium Crescent, Connaught Drive, St Andrew's Road and Empress Place. For details, visit: www.ndp.org.sg/public-advisories/

Bus services in the area will be diverted and traffic delays are expected.


Eight charged with SIM card fraud

Four men and four women were charged yesterday with fraudulently registering prepaid SIM cards in bulk to make money.

Police investigations of errant mobile phone shops found many of the cards were later used by unlicensed moneylenders.

The eight suspects, aged between 34 and 43, are thought to have made unauthorised changes to subscriber information on a system which registers prepaid SIM cards belonging to the three local telcos.

They were charged with various counts under Section 5(1) of the Computer Misuse and Cybersecurity Act. Each count carries a fine of up to $10,000, imprisonment of up to three years, or both.

Two of the suspects will be charged with more than 700 counts of the said offence.


Marine engineer training programme

A programme to encourage more Singaporeans to pursue careers as marine engineers was launched yesterday.

The Tripartite Engineering Training Award, offered by the Singapore Maritime Officers' Union and Wavelink Maritime Institute, will subsidise the training of about 20 cadets

per cohort and secure them placements with shipping firms. It was announced at the eighth Maritime Manpower Conference. Guest-of-honour Chan Chun Sing, Minister in the Prime Minister's Office and secretary-general of the National Trades Union Congress, stressed the need to boost a dwindling maritime workforce.
