Firm fined $40k for work safety breach

A 47-year-old electrician died after falling from a 2.2m-high ladder while installing closed-circuit television cameras at a multi-storey carpark in November 2013.

The company he worked for, Century Technology, was yesterday fined $40,000 after it pleaded guilty to a charge of contravening the Workplace Safety and Health Act.

Ministry of Manpower prosecuting officer Delvinder Singh told the court the ladders used at the worksite were of insufficient height - the ceiling was about 3.7m high.

Under the Code of Practice for Working Safely at Heights, persons on ladders should maintain three points of contact between the body and the ladder at all times, he noted.

S'porean gets death for Viet drug trafficking

A Singaporean man has been sentenced to death for trafficking 2.5kg of heroin, according to a report by Vietnam's English daily Thanh Nien News.

Lee Loke Dah, 40, who appeared before a Ho Chi Minh City court last Friday, was arrested at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in December 2014.

He had in his possession a plastic bag with thousands of capsules which tests confirmed contained heroin.

Vietnamese news site VnExpress reported that the capsules had been disguised to resemble peanut candy.

Under Vietnam's drug laws, a person convicted of possessing or smuggling more than 600g of heroin can face the death penalty.
