Early Christmas cheer for 100 needy children
More than 100 beneficiaries of The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund got to watch the movie Goosebumps yesterday at Golden Village Bishan.
The children, aged seven to 14, received free colouring books, umbrellas and a goody bag during the event. They were from family service centres including Ang Mo Kio and Fei Yue.
The event was part of cinema chain Golden Village's efforts to spread festive cheer to needy students. "Many of our children from low-income families have to worry about their daily needs. We are grateful... the less fortunate are not forgotten," said Ms Tan Bee Heong, general manager of the fund.
2 weeks' jail for causing motorcyclist's death
A mini-bus driver who caused the death of a motorcyclist through his negligence was jailed for two weeks and banned from driving for four years yesterday.
Ang Thiam Poh, 65, who pleaded guilty, was fined $150 for failing to obey the straight-arrow markings on the road, indicating that vehicles on the lane may only proceed straight.
He was driving along Penjuru Road on Dec 21 last year when he decided to make a quick U-turn after he overshot his intended destination.
He deliberately slowed down the mini-bus and tried to make the illegal U-turn without checking if there were vehicles approaching from behind.
He encroached into the path of motorcyclist Ramasamy Reddiar Kunnasegaran, 56, who crashed into his vehicle and died at the scene from a broken cervical spine.
