Had Dr Martin Herrenknecht been the older of his parents' two sons, he'd have been the one running the little upholstery shop in the picturesque Rhineland town of Allmannsweier in Germany.

Instead, that responsibility fell to his brother Dieter, who, in the tradition of the people who populate the Black Forest, inherited the family business. Martin was sent to university, where he studied engineering.
