Over 2,000 Sembawang GRC residents gathered at Republic Polytechnic on Sunday morning not just for their usual mass workout and 1.6km walk. They were also there to buy vegetables grown in their own backyard.
About 250kg of fresh vegetables from kai lan, chye sim and lettuce to corn went on sale for the first time at the GRC's annual Community Sports Festival that promotes healthy living. The fresh produce was grown at five community gardens managed by residents, and two PAP Community Foundation kindergartens.
National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan, guest of honour at today's event, said yesterday in a blog post that the success of vegetable growing at community gardens in Woodlands has benefitted needy residents. Every four to six weeks, such gardens have had so much harvest that residents were able to share them with needy families, he wrote. There are hundreds of community gardens now, which tend to be sited in residential estates.
Almost $6,000 from this morning's vegetable sale will go to Man Fut Tong Nursing Home, which cares for sick and needy senior citizens.
