SINGAPORE - The public are advised not to purchase two health products sold here that have been found to contain several undeclared potent ingredients which are prohibited.

A man in his 60s who consumed the products later experienced adverse effects, the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) said in a press release on Wednesday (Oct 19).

He first took Longred Oyster-x, which claimed to contain oyster powder to improve circulation and promote health, to prevent prostate problems.

The second product, LifeSparks 100% Natural Pain Relief Supplement, purportedly contained a natural pain relief supplement blend and was used to treat his leg pain and gout.

While the man experience rapid pain relief within a day after taking both products, he developed severe gastric pain and facial swelling after a week.

Both products were distributed by Paul Harrison International Pte Ltd and sold directly to consumers from the company's office in Ubi.

It has since stopped selling the products after HSA's investigations and directive.

The chemical compound found in Longred Oyster-x was found to be related to sildenafil, a potent prescription-only medicine used to treat erectile dysfunction. It can cause serious adverse effects such as decreased or loss of vision and hearing, low blood pressure and other cardiovascular events like strokes.

A potent steroid called dexamethasone was discovered in LifeSparks 100% Natural Pain Relief Supplement. It is usually prescribed for inflammatory conditions and should only be used under strict medical supervision.

HSA said long term unsupervised use of such an oral steroid could cause increased blood glucose levels, high blood pressure, cataracts, increased risk of infections and Cushing's syndrome.

Members of the public who have already bought and are consuming either product should stop the use of Longred Oyster-x but not that of LifeSparks.

The sudden discontinuation of steroids can cause serious withdrawal symptoms such as weakness, fatigue and low blood pressure, HSA warned.
