Diabetics to benefit from digital taste simulator

Diabetics might soon be able to enjoy the taste of sweetness without affecting their blood sugar levels by using a digital taste simulator.

Created by Dr Nimesha Ranasinghe from the National University of Singapore, the digital taste simulator allows the user to experience different taste sensations through non-invasive electrical and thermal stimulation of the tongue.

The pulses are transmitted through electrodes attached to a spoon and water bottle. By varying the electric current, different taste sensations can be produced.

The product is currently still in the development phase and Dr Ranasinghe hopes it will pave the way for tasting flavours online.
