The Singaporean victim of a murder in Hawaii died after being shot in the head, the Honolulu medical examiner has determined.

Hawaiian authorities told The Straits Times Thursday morning (Singapore time) that 33-year-old Tara Irdawati Isnin had died of "cranal cerebral injuries due to multiple gunshot wounds to the head".

Honolulu Police Department public affairs spokeswoman Teresa Bell said in a phone interview that the case has been classified as murder, and "there is only one suspect", whom Ms Bell could only identify as the 40-year-old male found with "apparent self-inflicted injuries" in the same apartment where Ms Tara's body was discovered.

He is still being hospitalised and no arrest has been made yet, added Ms Bell.

The man is understood to be Leo Chavez, Ms Tara's American husband.
