First, it was new babies born next year. Now, couples who get married in the Singapore Jubilee year will also get a special memento - an SG50 marriage certificate holder.
Ms Low Yen Ling, Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Social and Family Development, said yesterday that the initiative was inspired by members of the public who had suggested commemorating significant family milestones as part of the nation's 50th birthday.
"We think (the holder) represents their wedded bliss as well as the nation's joy of turning 50," she said at the Families for Life inaugural monthly picnic at Choa Chu Kang Park.
Earlier this month, it was revealed that all Singaporeans born next year will receive a commemorative birth certificate placed in a golden SG50 folder, with several other jubilee gifts such as a special medallion and a diaper bag.
Meanwhile, yesterday's event marked the first of 11 picnics which will be held monthly in the heartland as part of the Families for Life Celebrations.
Those who attended yesterday's event were also the first to be given a Families for Life resource kit which contains, among other things, a deck of two-in-one "My Family Game" cards and a foldable frisbee, to encourage families to bond.
