SINGAPORE - Just like how the pioneer generation built the nation into one admired globally, the next generation must ensure it grows into something even greater, said education minister Heng Swee Keat on Thursday .

In a National Day message at observance ceremonies across schools islandwide, Mr Heng applauded the success of Singapore's SEA Games athletes, who trained hard and won a historic haul of medals - 84 golds, 73 silvers and 102 bronzes - despite juggling heavy commitments.

He also stated his appreciation to volunteers and performers involved in the games, as well as performers for the upcoming National Day Parade, for the joy they brought to their families, friends and country.

Mr Heng also said that the future of Singapore lies in the hands of students, who will go on to build the country into something "bigger and better".
