SINGAPORE - Glass flew everywhere as a spanner suddenly flew into Mr Bryant Eng's car windscreen as he was driving on the expressway last week.

The solar tint on the windscreen probably stopped the metal tool from entering the car and injuring him, he told The Straits Times on Monday (May 29).

The incident happened as Mr Eng, who is in the army, was driving to work last Wednesday at about 8.45am, he said.

He was about to exit to the Bukit Timah Expressway from the Pan-island Expressway.

"As I was driving past a heavy vehicle trailer, a spanner suddenly flew out from under the trailer and was spun by the rear wheel onto my windscreen," the 27-year-old said.

"I had no time to react and the spanner smashed a hole at the bottom right of my windscreen and glass flew everywhere."

Replacing the windscreen at a workshop recommended by his insurer cost him $100 in excess, he added.

"Luckily there were no injuries and it hit a car instead of a motorcyclist!" he said.

A video of the incident, posted on Mr Eng's Facebook page and on Roads.sg, has garnered more than 24,000 views as of Monday morning.

The spanner took less than a second to hit the windscreen, and could only be seen in slow motion. Mr Eng also shared photos of the cracks radiating from where the spanner made its impact.

Netizens, spotting a Yoda figurine on Mr Eng's dashboard, were quick to crack Star Wars jokes.

"Yoda facing wrong direction thats why spanner came with greater force," said Facebook user Huang Jingwen.
