The body of a man was discovered by firefighters after they put out a fire at a Marine Crescent flat on Saturday, said a spokesman from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). The deceased is believed to be an elderly who was living at the unit with his wife.

Eyewitnesses said they saw thick, black smoke billowing out of the 10th floor unit and the glass windows cracking as the fire raged on from about 9.30am. Some residents of the block were trapped and had to be evacuated by SCDF officers.

Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, who is also MP for Marine Parade GRC was at the scene with other grassroots leaders to assist residents affected by the fire.

Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
