Talk about perfect timing: Baby Cayden New came into the world at exactly midnight, making him Singapore's first national day baby this year.

The 2.7 kg bundle of joy was born at Mount Alvernia Hospital, after a five-hour natural birth.

His early arrival, 15 days before his due date on August 24, surprised his parents, housewife Katherine Tan, 37, and electronics distributor Gavin New, 38.

He has an older brother, seven-year-old Brandon New.

Ms Tan was admitted to the hospital at 6pm on Thursday for high-blood pressure, but contractions started soon after.

Baby Cayden arrived right on the dot at 00:00:00.

"We never expected him to be the first baby out. It's great. Everyone will be celebrating national day and my son's birthday at the same time," said Mr New. "It's kind of special."

"I guess I'll have no excuse not to remember his birthday," he added, with a chuckle.

The couple received a hamper with goodies for the mother, including fortified cereal and milk powder.

The first baby girl Annabella Ter was born at 12:10 am at Thomson Medical Centre. She weighs 3.2 kg.
