The first group of pilgrims for this year's haj to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, leaving early this morning. The group of 43 were seen off by the Mufti of Singapore, Dr Mohamed Fatris Bakaram, and the senior director for Capacity Building and Strategic Engagement for the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore, Dr Albakri Ahmad. A total of 680 Singaporeans are expected to make the annual pilgrimage this year, with subsequent groups leaving between Sept 15 and 18. The pilgrims will be accompanied by a 21-member delegation from the Singapore Pilgrims' Affairs Office, including four doctors and 10 nurses.
