SINGAPORE - A fire broke out at Midpoint Orchard on Monday (March 28) night. No injuries were reported.

Witnesses said there was thick smoke pouring from the shopping mall opposite Somerset MRT station.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), which was alerted to the incident at around 9pm, said the fire involved some dry towels in a sauna at Rupini's, a beauty salon on the third floor. The sprinkler in the sauna room was activated by the flames.

An SCDF spokesman said that 10 employees of the beauty salon were evacuated.

Two fire engines, two Red Rhinos and three special vehicles were sent to the scene. The mall appeared to be cordoned off.

Twitter user Abel C took a photo of the SCDF officers gathered at the shopping mall entrance.

This is the third reported fire in Orchard Road this month, after two fires broke out at separate buildings on March 15.

One broke out at the Mandarin Orchard hotel's sixth-floor kitchen, and another started on the third-storey roof of Tang Plaza, which houses the Singapore Marriott Hotel and Tangs department store.

There were three other reported incidents in December last year - one at a Lucky Plaza restaurant on Dec 18, and two Christmas decorations that caught fire on Dec 10 and Dec 2.

The SCDF said there were 16 fires along the Orchard Road shopping belt last year, and 19 in 2014.
