Family charged with theft of Chinese New Year delicacies like abalone, bird's nest

Three members of a family were charged in a district court on Thursday for stealing Chinese New Year delicacies such as abalone and bird's nest from the Giant Hypermart at IMM Shopping Centre in Jurong East.

Chan Wee Kuan, 53, Tay Meng Koong, 52 and Chan Yu Huan, 23, are accused of stealing $230 worth of these items at 10.15pm on Jan 7. Chan and Tay are believed to be married to each other, with the younger Chan being their daughter.

No details of their alleged theft were mentioned in the charge sheets, which were read to them in Mandarin by the court interpreter. None of them entered a plea. They did not have a lawyer and the court set bail of $5,000 for each of them. Their cases will be mentioned again on Feb 13.

If convicted of theft, each could be jailed for up to seven years and fined up to $10,000.
