Ex-kitchen supervisor jailed for molesting disabled helper

A former kitchen supervisor was sentenced to nine months' jail on Tuesday for molesting an intellectually disabled kitchen helper.

Bernard Yong Teck Meng, 38, had been working in a restaurant at a hospital when he hugged, kissed and touched the 19-year-old part-time helper at a dry store of the premises on Sept 12, 2012. He pleaded guilty.

A Community Court heard that Yong told the victim at about 8am that day that he would take her to the dry store of the kitchen later to play.

At about 10am, he held her hand and brought her to the dry store where the offence was committed. After molesting her, he let go of the victim who then left the dry store.

That day, she reported to her mother that she did not wish to work any more as her supervisor had kissed and touched her many times.

A second similar charge committed about a week earlier was considered during his sentencing. Yong was allowed to have his sentence deferred until March 3 to sort out his personal matters. He could have been jailed for up to two years, fined or caned or received any combination of the punishments.
