1,000 people at funeral of Buddhist leader

More than 1,000 people attended the funeral of Singapore Buddhist Lodge president Lee Bock Guan yesterday.

He died at Singapore General Hospital at 3.15am last Saturday. He was undergoing dialysis when he developed a fever and was diagnosed with a viral infection.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong told Shin Min Daily News that Mr Lee, 70, was a good man who had done many charitable acts.

Ricoh printer gets S'pore Green Label

A new multifunctional colour printer from Japanese electronics firm Ricoh has become the 3,000th product to be certified under the Singapore Green Labelling Scheme (SGLS) yesterday.

The scheme, introduced in the 1990s, is administered by the non-governmental organisation Singapore Environment Council (SEC). It helps customers to identify energy-efficient and environmentally friendly products, including electrical appliances, building materials and household products.

Ricoh's printer consumes around 60 per cent less power in energy-saving mode compared to older models.

SGLS is the only eco-certification mark in South-east Asia.

Mr Edwin Seah, executive director of the SEC, said the growth shows an increased environmental consciousness among consumers and businesses.

33,000 to take part in mass fire drill

The National Fire and Civil Emergency Preparedness Council launched its annual Mass Fire Evacuation Drill campaign yesterday.

The month-long initiative aims to promote fire safety and emergency preparation in both commercial and industrial locations.

About 33,000 people are expected to participate this year at over 250 places.

The event is supported by the Singapore Civil Defence Force.
