MR PETER CHOU, 71

HE SELLS: Old electric fans

Mr Chou's love for repairing and restoring electronics led him to the flea market.

He left his job as a retail salesman during the 1997 Asian financial crisis. Fed up with being an employee, he wanted to become his own boss.

The Sungei Road flea market was a natural choice as it was a favourite haunt of his as a child.

"I made $100 on my first day and after that I became more determined. Working here is an interest and a passion for me," said Mr Chou.

Initially selling an assortment of electronics such as old radios, he gradually specialised in repairing broken electric fans and selling them for a higher price.

He has three adult children and five grandchildren.
