SINGAPORE - Nine Tamil teachers were recognised on Saturday (Sept 5) for making a difference to students' lives through the teaching of the language.

They were chosen from the more than 100 nominations received for this year's Most Inspiring Tamil Teachers awards, hosted by Tamil-language daily Tamil Murasu.

The top winners in the primary, secondary and junior college categories were Mrs Jegajothy of Shuqun Primary, Mr K. Saravanan of Temasek Secondary and Mr S. Jegathesan of Jurong Junior College.

Three retired teachers - Dr Rasappan, Dr K. Shanmugam and Dr Rajikannu - also received the Lifetime Inspiring Teacher awards, which are given to teachers who have devoted their prime years to the Tamil teaching profession. The winners were nominated by the Singapore Tamil Teachers Union.

Another two teachers, nominated by the National Institute of Education, won the Most Inspiring Trainee Teacher awards for their outstanding teaching performance. They are Mr Mohanadass and Ms Buveneswari.

The winners were chosen based on essays submitted through nomination forms from their students, ex-students, parents and colleagues, as well as endorsements from their school principals.
