At least two patches of brush caught fire on Saturday at Punggol and Jurong East, a likely result of one of Singapore's longest periods of dry weather.

The fire in Punggol, which broke out at the junction of Punggol Waterway and Punggol Road resulted in a blaze the size of a football field, said the Singapore Civil Defence Force which received a call at about 5.20pm. Two fire engines, one Red Rhino and a support vehicle were sent to the site. The fire was put out before 6.45pm, and no one was injured.

Mr Tan Xingwen, a resident who lives along Punggol 17th Avenue, said he and his family had been driving out for dinner at about 5.45pm when they found themselves caught in a jam on Punggol Road. The 29-year-old accountant said: "We saw a big brush fire that occurred beside the road, and saw smoke all over the place. The wind was strong, and causing the fire to spread." It was half an hour before they managed to get out of the jam, he added. "But even then, the firefighters were still doing their work."

Earlier in the day, a fire broke out at a grass patch near IMM mall in Jurong East at about lunchtime, said a contributor to citizen-journalism website Stomp.

Last Thursday evening, a fire broke out in a forested area at Sunset Way. In January, there were vegetation fires reported at Clementi Avenue 6 and Commonwealth Drive.
