Two upskirt offenders jailed

Two men were sentenced to jail yesterday for taking upskirt videos of women.

One was an engineer who took six upskirt videos of women in just over an hour at Toa Payoh MRT station and a supermarket at Toa Payoh Hub.

Darren Ng Jun Yang, 26, who admitted to three out of seven charges, including attempting to insult the modesty of a woman, was sentenced to eight weeks' jail.

A court heard that Ng was shopping at FairPrice supermarket at Toa Payoh Hub at about 7.15pm on July 14, 2015, when he saw a woman wearing a floral skirt at the poultry section. He switched on the video recording mode of his phone, placed it between her inner thighs from behind and captured an upskirt video of her.

About half an hour later, while at the chips section, he saw another woman wearing a white printed skirt. He approached her, squatted beside her and placed his phone between her inner thighs.

At around 8.15pm, at the same section, he took an upskirt video of another woman.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Houston Johannus said that after recording the last video, Ng went to make payment but was confronted by a man near a lift. The man handed Ng to a security officer, who called the police, and Ng was arrested.

Ng's lawyer T.M. Sinnadurai said his client was experiencing stress. He successfully asked the court to defer sentencing to May 29 for Ng to settlework matters.

In another court, Malaysian Leong Chen Wah, 30, a logistics officer who took upskirt videos of six women, was jailed for four weeks after admitting to two charges of insulting modesty.

On two occasions - Dec 21 and Dec 29 last year - he was standing on an escalator at Punggol Waterway Point when he took upskirt videos of an unknown woman each time.

Leong, a Singapore permanent resident, was caught by a pharmacy technician on Jan 3 at an escalator of a link bridge towards Compass One in Sengkang Square.

The maximum penalty for insulting modesty is one year's jail and a fine.
