2 men charged with extortion for threat to circulate teen's sex video

SINGAPORE - A 17-year-old boy was made to hand over $2,000 to two men to stop them from circulating his sexual video on social media.

On Saturday (Feb 17), Singaporean Naveenthiran Thevathas, 21, and Singapore permanent resident Nitesh Naidu Raj Kumar Naidu, 23, were each charged with one count of extortion.

Court documents did not provide details of the video, and how Naveenthiran and Nitesh, who is a Malaysian, got it.

On Valentine's Day, the pair allegedly threatened to circulate the video unless they were paid. The threat was made while the men were at Lot One Shoppers' Mall in Choa Chu Kang Avenue 4, at around 5.30pm.

The teenager handed them the money two days later in Hillcrest Road near Dunearn Road.

Both men stood expressionless before District Judge Shaiffudin Saruwan on Saturday.

No bail was offered and they are now remanded at Jurong Police Division.

They will be back in court on Feb 23.

If convicted of extortion, they can be jailed for between two and seven years and caned.
