Police investigating 20-year-old man for lodging false robbery report

A 20-year-old man is under investigation for making a false police report on Thursday, alleging that he had been robbed near Jurong East Avenue 1.

He had called 999 at 6.50am, claiming that he had been assaulted by three unknown men who fled after taking his money and mobile phone, said the police in a statement on Friday.

While ground officers conducted an extensive search to locate and nab the culprits, police also interviewed the man who had lodged the report.

During the process, they discovered several inconsistencies in the information he provided.

Within three hours of the report being lodged, the man admitted to giving the police false information.

Investigations are ongoing.

If convicted of giving false information to a public servant, the man could face up to one-year in jail and a $5,000 fine.
