A former tour guide who "bamboozled" an 89-year-old widow into entrusting him with $1.1 million was yesterday jailed for six years - on top of a 26-month term for faking his way to permanent residency.
Principal District Judge Bala Reddy said Yang Yin, 42, had "preyed on the vulnerability" of Madam Chung Khin Chun by misappropriating $500,000 and $600,000 on two separate occasions.
The prosecution had sought a jail term of 10 to 12 years.
Yang's lawyer said his client was "relieved", but Madam Chung's niece, Madam Hedy Mok, thought he should have received a longer sentence. She said: "What he stole was not only money... he actually took away her dignity."
