Man jailed for assaulting bus driver

SINGAPORE - A man who assaulted a bus driver was sentenced to four weeks' jail on Wednesday.

Tan Boon Teck, 57, punched Mr Ong Wei Ling in the face because he claimed the driver had not taken him to his destination. Mr Ong, 55, was in pain but did not seek medical help.

It is understood that Tan was drunk when the incident happened on Jan 14 last year, on board SBS bus service 238.

At around 10.40pm, Tan walked up to Mr Ong and scolded him as he drove. As the bus was travelling along Lorong 6 Toa Payoh and about to turn into Toa Payoh bus interchange, Tan tapped Mr Ong on his arm before attacking the driver.

Another passenger managed to stop Tan, and detained him while Mr Ong left the bus to get help from security officers at the interchange. Tan was later arrested by police.

For voluntarily causing hurt, he could have been jailed for up to two years and fined up to $5,000.
