Man gets 30 weeks for taking upskirt videos

A Malaysian man who took 76 upskirt videos of unknown women over two months was jailed for 30 weeks yesterday.

Chang Sean Der, 29, who is jobless, admitted to 15 of 76 charges of insulting the modesty of a woman at SGX Centre 2, Shenton Way and Tanjong Pagar MRT station.

The court heard that the complainant, a 30-year-old man, was on his way to Tanjong Pagar MRT station on Nov 21 last year when he saw Chang bending down as he walked close behind a woman.

He then went to an escalator where he stood behind another woman and held his cellphone with the camera facing up. The complainant later spotted him walking awkwardly again behind a third woman up a flight of stairs.

He approached Chang and asked to look at his mobile phone. When Chang began meddling with it, the complainant snatched it and took him to the control station, where police arrested him. Investigations found 76 upskirt videos taken from Sept 17 until his arrest.

Chang said that he took the videos as he was curious to know the colour and pattern of the victims' underwear. He kept them for his own viewing pleasure.

In mitigation, Chang's lawyer Nicholas Narayanan said his client, who holds a master's degree in finance from Britain, is remorseful and wants to move on.

After moving here to work in April last year, he had problems adjusting to life here, and was under stress from the pressures of his new job. His wife is expecting their first child later in the year.

Chang could have been jailed for up to one year, fined for each charge of intruding into the privacy of a woman, or both.
