The law caught up with Sim Teck Chye after a video was posted on social media which allegedly showed him stroking the thigh of a young woman seated next to him on an MRT train on Sunday .

Sim, 44, was charged in court yesterday with one count of outrage of modesty, committed on a train travelling from Tuas Link station to Pasir Ris.

The police said in a statement that information on a train molester had been posted on social media on Sunday. Officers from Jurong Police Division and the Public Transport Security Command later managed to establish his identity.

The video and his photos were uploaded on Facebook by a netizen known as Winna Chin and reported by citizen journalism website Stomp .

In the video, the suspect is seen glancing at the left thigh of a woman seated next to him and stroking it with his fingers.

She does not move at first and continues talking to her friend seated on the other side of her.

According to Ms Chin, he eventually stopped and got off the train after the girl's friend reached across and slapped his hand.

Ms Chin said on Facebook that she did not confront the man as she was afraid he would turn violent. She said: "I did ask the girl to stand up but she chose to only move nearer to her friend and not move away."

Ang Mo Kio Police Division officers arrested Sim at Hougang Mall at 4.45pm on Wednesday .

Sim, who was unrepresented, will be remanded for psychiatric observation at the Institute of Mental Health. He will be back in court on July 21. If convicted of outrage of modesty, he can be jailed up to two years and fined or caned.
