Man arrested for attempted extortion with 'compromising photos' of victim's wife

SINGAPORE - A man has been arrested for allegedly attempting to extort $500 from a victim.

The 34-year-old suspect threatened to post online compromising photographs of the victim's wife, police said in a statement on Thursday (Aug 11).

The victim, a 32-year-old man, reported to the police on Monday that he received a call from a stranger, who demanded $500 from him.

The stranger said he had compromising photos of the victim's wife and would disseminate them on the Internet if the victim did not cooperate.

The suspect was nabbed by the police at Jurong West Avenue 5 on Wednesday.

His mobile phone was seized as evidence.

If found guilty of attempted extortion, the suspect faces a jail term of up to five years with caning.
