Delivery driver jailed for punching cleaner after dumping row

SINGAPORE - A delivery driver punched a cleaner after he told him not to dump cardboard and styrofoam at a void deck, a court heard.

For causing hurt to Bangladeshi conservancy worker Hossain Mohammad Tohin, Ong Ah Chye, 42, was jailed for five days on Monday (Feb 19).

He pleaded guilty to hurting the 25-year-old at Block 104A Canberra Street in Sembawang at about 1.30pm on June 30 last year.

The court heard that Mr Hossain was fixing pipes at the void deck when he saw Ong unload some cardboard and styrofoam from his lorry.

He told Ong not to dump items illegally.

An argument ensued before Ong threw a punch at Mr Hossain before driving off.

The victim suffered a small cut at the corner of his lip and was given two days of medical leave.

Pleading for leniency, Ong said the victim quarrelled with him and he acted on impulse. He said he had apologised.

Ong could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined up to $5,000 for causing hurt.
