Cop shot his lover, and then himself

A policeman's affair with a dance hostess and stripper ended in tragedy, when both parties died later in a murder and suicide.

Inspector Gurcharan Singh, 25, died on Aug 24, 1965. He had been in a coma for 12 days after being found with a gunshot wound in his head, lying in bed next to the dead body of his lover, Annie Chia, 30. She had been shot in the head.

The couple were found in her home in Aida Street at Opera Estate. Both bullets came from the gun that lay on Mr Singh's chest.

It emerged in court the following year that Mr Singh had wanted to marry Ms Chia, who was pregnant with his child. Ten days before the shooting, he learnt that she already had a husband.

The court ruled that he had murdered her, before turning the gun on himself.

A Straits Times report in 1965 noted: "Over the past 12 years some 20 of the 30 police officers in Singapore and the States of Malaya who shot themselves with their own weapons were involved in love affairs."
