A cook who molested a woman while she was sleeping was jailed for five months on Tuesday.

Ong Yong Chern, 23, a Malaysian, admitted to caressing the breast of a 28-year-old administrative officer over her clothing, at a flat in the east on May 1 last year.

The court heard that Ong was a tenant while the victim and her mother were occupying a room in the victim's uncle's flat as her apartment was being renovated.

The mother and daughter would always lock the door to the room except when one of them leaves to use the toilet at night.

The victim was sleeping at about 6.40am when her mother left the room to use the toilet, leaving the door to the room unlocked.

Ong, who had returned earlier, went into the room and put his hand under the victim's blanket and molested her.

He then lifted the blanket off the victim's body and used his hand to touch her buttocks. This charge was taken into consideration during his sentencing.

The victim turned and saw Ong sitting on the bed beside her and shouted. He fled into his room.

Ong, who has lost his job, could have been jailed for up to two years, fined, caned or given any combined punishment.
