Construction firms must go green to bid for public projects

Construction companies that want to bid for public projects must adhere to green standards by end-2016.

In order to be included under the Building Construction Authority's registry, large- and medium-sized firms must be certified under the Green and Gracious Building Scheme.

Previously a voluntary scheme, it encourages companies to adopt more energy-saving measures and to minimise noise in construction work.

Some 300 firms are expected to be affected by the announcement, which Senior Minister of State for National Development and Trade and Industry Lee Yi Shyan made at the Singapore Contractors Association Limited's environmental sustainability conference on Monday.
