The Community Chest (ComChest) raised more than $996,000 through school appeals in the financial year 2012. This amount is the highest on record since 2003.
Donations were made through ComChest's Youth Day and Children's Day appeals. The average amount raised by each participating school via the Youth Day appeal was more than $2,100, while the corresponding amount for the Children's Day appeal was nearly $2,400.
"The increasing amount raised by the participating schools for Community Chest's beneficiaries is very encouraging," said ComChest general manager Ms Ng Ling Ling in a statement on Friday. "We are very heartened that the students have gone the extra mile to spend time understanding the needs of the less privileged beyond just raising funds."
ComChest is currently funding 228 social service programmes offered by 83 charities. Donations help over 300,000 people including special needs children, needy elderly, and the disabled.
