Cleaner jailed for pocketing Rolex watches worth $12,000

A woman cleaner who pocketed two Rolex watches she found in a handicapped toilet was sentenced to one week's jail on Wednesday.

Selvapackiam S. Anthonysamy, 32, admitted to dishonestly misappropriating a pouch with the watches worth $12,000 belonging to financial controller Jeffrey Ho Hiu Sing, 37, at the toilet at Novena Specialist Centre in Sinaran Drive on Jan 11 last year.

The court heard that Mr Ho only realised he had left the pouch with the two watches in the restroom after he returned home.

Selvapackiam who found the watches while cleaning the restroom called her husband, then cleaning supervisor Kanagasebai Saravadi, 52. She asked him to ascertain if the Rolex were genuine. Kanagasebai pawned one of the watches for $10,000 and used part of it to repay his debts. The family spent some money to buy groceries and jewellery.

The mother of three, who had her sentence deferred until Jan 23, could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined.
