Charity concert gets $100k boost

Donation from HSBC Bank, one of the show's main sponsors this year

Charity concert ChildAid, which aims to raise at least $1.7 million, received a $100,000 donation yesterday from HSBC Bank.

Now in its seventh year, the concert raises cash for The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund, which assists children from low-income families with their school-related expenses, and The Business Times Budding Artists Fund, which helps give underprivileged youngsters an education in the arts.

The two public shows are on Thursday and Saturday.

HSBC's donation yesterday brought its total contribution to the two funds to a record of more than half a million dollars for the year.

The bank has been supporting ChildAid since the show's inception and is one of the main sponsors of this year's event. The other main sponsor this year is Citibank.

HSBC Singapore's chief executive Alex Hungate said the bank has been a consistent supporter of the two funds because their aim to help less fortunate children learn and grow in school and in the arts resonates with the bank's values.

The donation was presented by Mr Hungate to The Straits Times editor Han Fook Kwang and The Business Times editor Alvin Tay at the bank's year-end festive party for 80 underprivileged children held at the National Museum of Singapore.

At the party, children from the Society for the Physically Disabled, Ang Mo Kio Family Service Centre, Seng Kang Family Service Centre and the Little Arts Academy were given a tour of an exhibition of masterpieces from Paris' Musee d'Orsay, an art lesson and a chance to create their own art pieces.

The two editors helped to judge the children's art competition at the party.
