Changi Airport handled 4.28 million passengers in May - up 4.7 per cent from the same period last year - while flight movement for the month increased by 5.4 per cent to 28,500 flights, due to strong travel demand.
There was healthy increase in air travel between Singapore and destinations in South-east Asia, North-east Asia and South Asia, the Changi Airport Group said in a statement on Thursday. Among its top 10 markets, movements to Japan, Malaysia and Thailand registered double-digit growth. Changi's top five markets for the month were Australia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.
Total passenger movement for the first five months of the year was 21.6 million, up 4.8 per cent from the same period a year earlier. Aircraft movements grew in tandem, increasing by 4.3 per cent to 138,600. Air-freight shipments, however, dipped 2.4 per cent to 727,100 tonnes for the corresponding period and cargo movement fell 3.5 per cent to 147,600 tonnes in May from a year earlier.
