Cancer research projects here have been given a $250,000 boost from three Terry Fox runs that were held on Feb 16. Over 3,000 runners participated in the fun runs that took place at East Coast Parkway and the Canadian International School.

These runs were named in honour of Canadian Terry Fox who lost his leg to cancer and attempted to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research when he was 21 years old.

Dr Ang Peng Tiam, chairman of the Singapore Cancer Society, said the society was heartened by the continued support of the Canadian community here towards cancer research.

"Cancer remains the No. 1 killer in Singapore, responsible for one in every three deaths. The numbers of cancer patients and deaths from cancer worldwide are expected to continue rising," he said.

"The continuous support to aid cancer research is the path that will lead to improved quality of patients' lives and hopefully a cure for the disease."
