Cabby dragged motorcyclist under taxi for 26m in fatal hit-and-run

A cabby who rear-ended a motorcycle and dragged its rider under the taxi for the length of a basketball court claimed that he thought he had gone over a road hump.

Ng Chin Huat, 63, who drove off after the incident, was jailed for six weeks on Wednesday for the fatal hit-and-run. He was also banned from driving for five years.

In passing sentence, District Judge Low Wee Ping said: "It's highly incredible you did not realise you hit the deceased and had dragged him for about 26m." The court heard that the cabby was driving along East Coast Parkway heading towards Changi Airport at 11.45pm on May 20, 2011, when Mr Hussain came onto the expressway from the slip road from Siglap Link.

The collision sent the motorcycle crashing into the guardrail. Mr Hussain, 60, a crane operator, was flung off his machine. The taxi ran over him and he was dragged along. Ng pleaded guilty to causing death by a negligent act, failing to stop and for not rendering assistance after an accident.
