SINGAPORE - A taxi driver claimed that he was punched in the head by a drunk passenger who refused to pay the $16 fare.

The incident involving 66-year-old Mr Yang took place at Tanglin Park condominium on early Friday at around 2.30am, the Chinese evening newspaper Shin Min Daily News reported.

According to Mr Yang's colleague, Mr Huang, the cabby sent a plea for help in a voice message, saying a Caucasian passenger had refused to pay the $16 fare and wanted to fight.

When Mr Huang got to the scene, he found the cabby lying on the road - bleeding from the right side of his head, with a bruised right shoulder.

Police said a 43-year-old man is assisting with investigations with the case.

In a separate incident on May 24, a taxi driver was repeatedly punched and pushed against a wall after a passenger allegedly refused to pay the fare of $41. The incident happened at Block 658B Jurong West Street 65.
