SINGAPORE - Political donation certificates have been issued to the five people who applied for it by last Saturday.

The certificate is one of the documents candidates must submit on Wednesday - Nomination Day - if they are to run as candidates for the May 7 Bukit Batok by-election.

The Elections Department, which issued the statement on Monday, did not disclose the names of the candidates.

But only one of the five people has yet to be identified.

The four who have been issued the certificates are:

Mr Murali Pillai, 48, of the People's Action Party (PAP), and Dr Chee Soon Juan, 53, of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP). They declared their intention to run last month, before the writ of election was issued on April 20.

The other two are private-hire car driver Sherwin Eu, 32, and former opposition candidate Abdul Rahim Osman, 59. They have yet to confirm whether they will contest the by-election.

If they do, the constituency will have a multi-cornered fight, as was seen in Punggol East single-member constituency in 2013.

The seat was vacated after former PAP MP David Ong resigned on March 12 over an alleged extramarital affair.
