Budget 2013: Sports to get $250 million boost, goal is to build strong sporting culture

The government will boost its spending on sports programming by more than $250 million over the next five years to build a strong sporting culture among Singaporeans.

A key initiative is the Sports Facilities Master Plan, which will transform the Republic's island-wide network of facilities into lifestyle destinations and sporting spaces.

Sports facilities will be made better and brought closer to Singaporeans, in a bid to get citizens more engaged in sports, Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Lawrence Wong, said in Parliament on Friday.

It includes opening up more facilities within schools - beyond the usual indoor sports halls and school fields - for community use.

Four tiers of facilities will cater to sporting needs at the national, regional, town and neighbourhood levels.

Besides the $1.33-billion Singapore Sports Hub, which with its world-class facilities will form the top tier, Regional Sports Centres (RSC), Town Sports and Recreational Centres and community play fields will also be developed.

The Tampines Town Hub will be Singapore's first RSC, with more locations being studied. Such RSCs will be bigger and better than existing stadia. They will have a bigger seating capacity, LED screens for better spectator experience and incorporate other lifestyle and recreational facilities.

Some of Singapore's older stadiums will also be converted into Sports Parks which will be integrated with nearby parks and park connectors. They will have a broad range of amenities, from fitness stations to sport climbing facilities.
