Budget 2013: NLB to add 820,000 e-books to library collections

Book lovers will soon be able to read a greater variety of e-books on computers and mobile devices when the National Library Board (NLB) adds 820,000 more e-books to its collection by the end of this year.

This was announced by Ms Sim Ann, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Communications and Information at the Committee of Supply debates in Parliament today.

The additional titles will raise the size of NLB's e-book collection to over three million.

Ms Sim said the new e-books are part of efforts by the Government to increase the reach of libraries and serve the needs of those who prefer online information sources.

From May 2, Singaporeans and permanent residents with basic library membership will be able to borrow up to eight items instead of six previously.

NLB said the new loan quota is aimed at meeting the rising demand from library visitors and to encourage Singaporeans to read more widely.
