SINGAPORE - A couple narrowly escaped serious injury after bricks and concrete from construction works next to their two-storey house fell into their bedroom.

The sludge of construction material poured in after a party wall, which stands between the house in Geylang and the adjacent condominium under construction, gave way last Thursday (Sept 10).

The house owner, who identified herself as Ms Tan, said she was sitting on a sofa by the bedroom door, and her husband was lying on the bed when they heard a "ticking" sound.

When she got up to check what was causing it, bricks and concrete fell through the ceiling and landed between her and her husband, Lianhe Wanbao reported on Tuesday.

She was grazed on her right leg and her husband was cut on the shoulder. Later, they found that part of their storeroom ceiling was also damaged.

The owners have lived there for about 30 years, they said.

The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) said it was notified of the incident at the two-storey house at Geylang Lorong 32 last Thursday evening. BCA engineers inspected the site on the same evening.

Concreting works for a segment of reinforced concrete wall were being carried out when the party wall gave way, a BCA spokesman said.

Some wet concrete and brick pieces fell through the second storey plasterboard ceiling of the couple's house and landed in the bedrooms.

The BCA said that the structural integrity of the house was not affected, but two rooms where the concrete had fallen into have been vacated and cordoned off. The roof was also propped up as an added precaution.

The BCA said it has revoked the permit for construction works for the condominium and instructed the project parties to carry out a detailed investigation of the incident.
