Awards for extraordinary transport staff

When cabby Sen Kok Choon saw three bikers skid on the rain-slicked road and two of them fall off their machines, he pulled over and directed traffic away from them.

He found that they had sustained minor injuries, so he decided to drive the trio and a pillion rider to the National University Hospital.

"It's only natural I did that as there was nobody around at that time," said Mr Sen, who was driving home along Lornie Road at 1.30am in July. For his efforts, Mr Sen was yesterday given the Transport Gold Award, a collaboration between the various public transport companies, Singapore Kindness Movement, and Land Transport Authority. The award recognises public transport staff who go the extra mile.

This year, 417 awards were given out by Transport Minister Khaw Boon Wan in a ceremony held at The Joyden Hall in Bugis yesterday.

Receiving the award for the fourth time wasSMRT senior assistant station manager Faridah Salim, 52. Earlier this year, she provided a wheelchair to an elderly man who was feeling giddy at Tampines MRT station, and helped him home.
