Audit manager helps nab upskirt culprit

A 37-year-old man, believed to have taken an upskirt photo of a female commuter on an MRT train, was caught red-handed by a member of public.

Audit manager Lim Teck Wee, 32, had been on that train at about 9am on Tuesday, when he saw the suspect hold his mobile phone under the skirt of a 23-year-old woman standing in front of him.

Mr Lim alerted the victim, and followed the suspect when he got off the train. He alerted security officers at the station, who then handed the matter over to the police.

Upon the police's arrival, checks were conducted on the suspect and obscene photographs were found in his mobile phone. The suspect was placed under arrest and his mobile phone was seized.

Investigations against the suspect are ongoing.

If convicted of the offence of Insulting the Modesty of a Woman under Section 509 of the Penal Code Chapter 224, the suspect may be jailed up to a year, or fined, or both.

For the offence of Possession of Obscene Material under Section 292(1)(a) of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, he can be jailed up to three months, or fined, or both.

Commander of Clementi Police Division, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Melvin Yong, commended Mr. Lim for his public-spiritedness and thanked him for his assistance in detaining the suspect. ''Mr. Lim witnessed a wrongdoing and he acted on his instincts to ensure that the offender did not get away with his crime,'' he said.
