Singapore ballet dancer Yeo Siong Leng, better known as Yang Yee, was in the news this week in 1965 after having won a scholarship to extend his studies in Germany.

Yeo had gone on a one-year scholarship to study choreography and ballet at the Folkwang School for Music, Dance and Drama in Essen, Germany, in 1964.

In 1965, he landed another scholarship, to continue for a further year at the school's master class.

He received the award after doing well, having been chosen to perform a solo in a performance of Richard Wagner's opera, Tannhauser, at the Bayreuth Wagner Festival before an international audience.

Yeo, who also studied TV production in Germany, returned here in 1969. As a TV producer at Radio and Television Singapore, he was involved in cultural programmes. He resigned in 1978 at 35, and later moved to Hong Kong, where he became a real estate businessman.
