Five members of the Singapore Boys' Brigade received the President's Award yesterday at the Istana.
President Tony Tan Keng Yam presented the award to candidates who emerged top in the Boys' Brigade Primers Programme, which is for those aged between 16 and 18. The recipients were Senior Cadet Lieutenants (SCL) Luke Chng, Jeffrey Gwee, Timothy James Chong, Seah Jaye Young and Joseph Tong, all 18.
The President's Award is given to members who have fulfilled proficiency tests and rigorous requirements in leadership and community service for the past six years.
SCL Chong, 18, who has been in the Boys' Brigade for six years, has held various leadership roles.
He is also active in volunteering to help underprivileged Singaporeans. He helps out each year at the warehouse when the Boys' Brigade runs its Share-a-Gift campaign, where donated goods are repackaged for needy families.
"I am honoured to have received this award. I want to stay on and serve as an officer in my com- pany and be a mentor to my juniors," he said.
The Boys' Brigade has more than 7,000 boys and officers in 116 companies in Singapore, each of which is attached to a school and co-sponsored by a church.
