40-year-old woman drowns after jumping into Singapore River

SINGAPORE - A 40-year-old woman drowned after jumping into the Singapore River at Clarke Quay in the early hours of Thursday.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to the incident at around 2am and the victim Tan Bee Eng was pronounced dead at scene.

According to evening daily Lianhe Wanbao, Ms Tan went to a bar where her 22-year-old son was working.

She reportedly got drunk and got into an argument with him.

An eyewitness told Wanbao that she seemed agitated and then jumped into the river near Liang Court.

A man in his 30s jumped in after her in a bid to save her, but failed to do so.

About seven family members and friends, including her husband and son, were at the mortuary on Thursday morning.

Police are investigating and treating the case as an unnatural death.
