3 speakers to join PM Lee for National Day Rally

Three members of the Cabinet will speak at the National Day Rally on Sunday, sharing the stage with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Education Minister Heng Swee Keat, Senior Minister of State (Education and Defence) Lawrence Wong and Minister of State (Community Development, Youth and Sports) Halimah Yacob will speak from 6.45pm to 7.30pm, followed by Mr Lee from 8pm, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said in a statement on Tuesday.

The Prime Minister usually delivers the annual address to the nation - seen as the most important political speech of the year - but Cabinet ministers have spoken at the rally in the 1980s.

Two of the three speakers were tasked this month with new responsibilities.

Mr Heng is leading a committee of young ministers to engage the nation in a discussion that will shape policies and map a vision for the future, while Mr Wong will be Acting Minister of the newly-formed Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth from Nov 1.

The PMO said: "Mr Lee and the Ministers will give their take on the future Singapore that we wish to see, and how Singaporeans can work together to build a better home for all."
